Common questions
Does a septic installer in Alberta need to be certified?
Yes. A contractor needs a current certificate of competency to get permits for private sewage system design and installation in Alberta. Source: Government of Alberta, private sewage codes and standards.
What is the difference between the two certificate types?
The provincial list uses two designations. PS covers private sewage systems of all types. R-PS is a restricted ticket for installing holding tanks only. Both are defined on the certification list.
How can I confirm an installer is certified?
Check the current installer certification list. If a name isn't on it, the list says to contact safety.services@gov.ab.ca or call 1-866-421-6929 to confirm.
Who issues the permit for my system?
Your municipality or its accredited safety codes agency. For example, the City of Red Deer requires a licensed contractor to apply and a final inspection when work is done. Each community page includes a permit note.
Are pumping and repair companies listed?
Not fully yet. The provincial list covers certified installers. Many also pump and repair, but the list doesn't say which services they offer. Pumping and repair businesses can add a free listing.
Does Alberta Septic Guide rank or review businesses?
No. There are no ratings or reviews. Free listings appear alphabetically within each community. Any featured listing is clearly labelled as featured.
